The Netherlands were governed by J. van Oldenbarneveld (politics) and Maurice of Orange (army). During the Twelve Year Truce, Maurice also meddled with politics, which caused difference of opinions. Maurice had Van Oldenbarneveld captured under the pretence of treason and finally beheaded.
