The picture shows Arminius, the chieftain of the Cherusci, who in the year 9 AC defeated three Roman legions. You can see the Germanic soldiers coming out of the woods and throwing their spears after the Romans. Arminius had Roman civil rights and as a Roman ally had obtained the confidence of the Roman governor. Arminius awaited the right moment, ambushed the Romans and defeated them.
