The people is swept up in a wave of patriotic enthusiasm. , 1960 - The picture shows soldiers, liable to military service in August 1914, who are gathering after the announcement of mobilization (1st of August). The crowds are waving with their hands and flags and the street is decorated with the black-white and red flags of the German Empire. The uniforms and helmets of the soldiers are also decorated; the soldiers seem to march out enthusiastically, voluntarily and with a sense of self-sacrifice.

The four-funnel express steamer wins the race for the fastest Atlantic crossing; in terms of technical progress the so called “decade of the Germans” (1898-1908) began. Furthermore a Zeppelin is depicted. This rigid airship was constructed by Graf von Zeppelin, who was supported by the German shipping company Hapag. Inauguration of the Suez Canal 1869 , 1963 - The picture shows the inauguration ceremony of the Suez Canal. After having obtained a concession from the Egypt viceroy, Vicomte de Lesseps created the Suez Canal Company and in the years 1859-1869 constructed the Suez Canal, according to the plans of Alois Negrellis and financed by French capital. The inauguration took place on 17th of November 1869. The new direct connection between Europe and the countries situated along the coast of the Indian Ocean strengthened the world trade and the coastal shipping of Egypt. In the picture you can see the crowds at the banks of the canal, watching the huge steamships. Everywhere you can see the flags of France and the Ottoman Empire. You can further distinguish people from different cultures, European officers in uniforms, women in dresses and with umbrellas as well as Central Asian men with caftans, turbans and camels.

Federal Assembly 1848 Berne, 1947 - The picture shows the ceremony of the federal Constitution of Switzerland, which was adapted on 12th of September 1848 by the federal assembly. With this Constitution the federal state of Switzerland was founded. The army holds a parade with drums and flags in front of the government building and the parliament in Berne. Above the people you can see the flags of all the cantons of Switzerland. The tricolor of the Helvetic Republic and the Swiss flag are hanging from the facade.

Emigration reached its peak in the 19th century. The wide unsettled land of the United States and news of gold finds in California attracted the immigrants.

French Revolution: Louis XVI on the way to his execution Paris, 1955 - The picture shows the Place de la Révolution, today known as Place de la Concorde. On this chart King Louis XVI’s way to his execution by guillotine is depicted. In the center of the picture you can see Louis XVI in a modest linen garment, with bound hands on a carriage. On 11th of December 1792 he was put on the trial before the National Convention. He was sentenced to death because of high treason and crime against the state (la conspiration contre la liberté publique et la sûreté générale de l'État). On the morning of the 21st January 1793 he was guillotined as citizen Louis Capet (referring to Hugo Capet, first ancient of the French ruling dynasty) by hangman Charles-Henri Sanson. Surrounded by the soldiers of the Revolution the depiction of the guillotine in the vanishing point of Louis is oversized. In the foreground of the picture you can only see few citizens, watching the execution. On the left side on of them is waving the tricolor, which first came up during the Revolution and later should become the national flag of France.

The United States of America declare their independence from the British Empire (1776) Philadelphia, - On 4th of July 1776 the Continental Congress of the 13 American colonies declared their independence from the British Empire and thus declared the United States of America as a sovereign state. On the picture you can see Thomas Jefferson the main author of the formal declaration, probably holding this document in his hands. The scene took place in the Pennsylvania State House (today Independence Hall) of Philadelphia where the declaration was adapted. You can see further representatives of the 13 States and on the left side of the picture is depicted the American star spangled banner, although the first version of the “Stars and Stripes” is dated to the year 1777. The 13 red and white stripes of the flag symbolize these 13 founding States of the US.

Tussen de Engelse en Vlaamse kust., 1911 circa - Uit handleiding circa 1915: Het was de 10e juni 1666, de dag vóór den Vierdaagschen Zeeslag. “Op dien zelven dagh liet de L. Admiraal de Ruiter alle d’Opperhoofden en Kapiteinen een syn boordt seinen: hun met korte woorden en krygsmans welspreekentheit, vermaandende, biddende en tegelijk ernstelijk beveelende, zich in ’t aanstaande gevecht wel te quyten.” Aan deze gedenkwaardige krijgsraad geeft de plaat een levendige herinnering. Rechts op den voorgrond ligt machtig en fier “De Zeven Provinciën”. Aan de verschansing staat met ongedekten hoofde De Ruiter zelf. Van alle kanten komen reeds sloepen met de vlootvoogden en kapiteins aangeroeid. In de sloep rechts op de voorgrond is de Luitenant-Admiraal Cornelis Tromp gezeten. De vierdaagse zeeslag vond plaats tijdens de Tweede Engels-Nederlandse oorlog.

Christian IV på Trefoldigheden Oostzee, 1944 circa - I december 1643 indledte den svenske general Torstensson en overrumplingskrig ved at erobre Holsten og efterfølgende hele Jylland, da Christian IV forsøgte at indføre en told for alle skibe, der ville sejle på Elben til og fra Hamburg. 1. juni sejlede den svenske hovedflåde ud fra Stockholm for at sejle Torstenssons tropper til Sjælland. Da flåden nåede frem, var der ingen tropper, og flåden erobrede i stedet Femern. 1. juli mødtes den danske og svenske flåde i søslaget på Kolberger Heide. Slaget endte uafgjort, men det lykkedes den danske flåde at indespærre den svenske flåde i Kielerfjorden. Søslaget på Kolberger Heide blev berømt, fordi kongen mistede synet på det ene øje, da en svensk kugle ramte en kanon på flagskibet Trefoldigheden. Kongen faldt om, men rejste sig straks igen og opfordrede til videre kamp, hvilket gav Johannes Ewald inspiration til kongesangen ”Kong Christian stod ved højen Mast” og Vilhelm Marstrand til dette maleri.

Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden, praying before the Battle of Lützen 1632 Lützen, 1911 - “Based on an oil-painting of Prof. Louis Braun”. The picture shows king Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632), who1630 intervened in the Thirty Years War in Germany. He fought for the German Protestants against the Habsburg powers, who reaching the Baltic Sea were a threat to Sweden. In the year 1632 near Lützen (today Saxony-Anhalt) he fought against Wallenstein and the Habsburg troops and was killed by a shoot. Later the Protestants revered him as martyr and declared him savior of the German Protestantism, although he only aimed at defending the hegemonic power of Sweden. The picture shows Gustav praying before the battle raising his sword up to the sky. Behind Gustav you can see cavalries with the Swedish flag, in front of him killed soldiers.

Op de reede van Bantam 1598. Bantam, 1913 - Handleiding 1917: Jacob van Neck (leider van de tweede Nederlandse expeditie naar Oost-Indië (1598-1600)): ’s Morgens bij zonsopkomst, terwijl ik bezig was mijn fraaiste kleren aan te trekken, kwam Ab-dul in mijn hut zeggen, dat er een prauwtje langs ons schip lag met een Chinees, die mij namens den Gouverneur van het land kwam vragen, wat het doel van onze komst was. Ik liet de Chinees weten dat we gekomen waren om de Gouverneur om vriendschap te verzoeken om vredig en beleefd met de inwoners van Bantam te mogen handelen. Mijn secretaris Cornelis Heemskerck, ging aan land om de gouverneur te spreken. Op de afbeelding ligt het admiraalsschip van Jacob van Neck, Mauritius genaamd, het meest vooraan. Op het hek waait de rood-wit-zwarte vlag van Amsterdam, met het stedelijk wapen in de witte baan. De vlag aan de grote top is de Statenvlag. Op de andere mast waait de vlag van de Prins, met zijn wapen in de witte baan. Naar links ligt de Utrecht en meer nabij de kust het kleine jacht Overijssel. Het grote jacht Friesland vaart voor de zeilende vloot uit. Achteraan zeilt het schip de Hollandia, waarop Jacob van Neck zich bevindt. Op de achtergrond ligt de stad Bantam. Hoog boven de ommuring verrijst het dak van een moskee. Het is december, daarom laat de tekenaar een Westmoesson waaien. De lucht is dan minder strak. Het blauw waait soms vol nevelachtige wolken, die, zwaarder samengepakt, de plasregens geven.

Giornico 1478 Giornico, 1948 - The picture shows the battle near Giornico, on 28th of December 1478, in the today’s Canton Ticino. The Canton Uri fought against Milan for the valley of Leventina which is the main entrance to the Gotthard Pass. You can see the Swiss army, which in the narrow valley and under the wintry conditions has the advantage over the Milan army. They’re throwing boulders at the enemy in the valley. You can see the flag of the Canton Uri (black cow head on yellow background) and the Milan flag (white snake on red background).

Joan of Arc and the coronation of Charles VII Reims, - The picture shows the coronation of Charles VII in the Cathedral of Reims on 17th of July 1429. Joan of Arc participated in the ceremony. Volmerslaget tallinn, 1898 - I forsommeren 1219 samlede den danske konge Valdemar Sejr en hær og sejlede med en stor flåde mod Estland som korsfarere. De slog sig ned ved Lyndanisse, hvor de begyndte at bygge en borg, der på estisk fik navnet Taani-linn, dvs. danskerborgen – den senere estiske hovedstad Tallin. Her blev hæren den 15. juni angrebet af esterne, der en tid lang så ud til at ville vinde slaget, men krigslykken vendte sig, og det lykkedes korsfarerne at jage den estiske hær på flugt. Senere opstod der den legende, at biskop Anders Sunesen, da det så mørkest ud, hævede hænderne mod himlen, og at der faldt et blodrødt flag med et hvidt kors ned som kom til at gøre udslaget. På billedet ses Konge Valdemar i midten på sin hvide hest med fanen, der fik navnet Dannebrog. Den er imidlertid identisk med Johannitterordenens fane, så legenden skyldes måske, at man kæmpede under denne korsridderordens fane.
