Luther´s posting of his theses in Wittenberg , 1936 - The picture shows Martin Luther (1483-1546) in front of the portal of the castle church in Wittenberg after he posted his 95 theses in the year 1517. The Augustinian monk Martin Luther, wearing his black monk`s habit is leaving the scene with a serious face. In his hand he´s still holding the hammer he used to nail the paper.

In een middeleeuwsch Klooster (Laatste helft 15e eeuw) Utrecht, circa 1911 - Uit handleiding circa 1915: De plaat gunt ons een blik in de boekerij van Karthuizermonniken, die naar het bericht van vele schrijvers tegelijk tot scriptorium was ingericht. Daar maakten de monniken de kostbare handschriften, daar verluchtten zij de afgeschreven boeken met fraaie miniaturen, maar daar ook beoefenden zij kunsten en wetenschappen. Voor de lessenaar staat een monnik verdiept in de aanschouwing van een miniatuur, dat hij naar eigen opvatting gewijzigd gebruiken zal voor de verluchting van een handschrift. In de schrijfstoel rechts, onder het open venster, dat uitziet op de tuin met geneeskrachtige kruiden, is een monnik moeizaam aan de arbeid. Op de schrijfplank wordt door middel van gespannen koorden, waaraan afhangende loden gewichten zijn bevestigd, het in het klooster zelve bereide blad perkament vlak gehouden. In de rechterhand houdt de ijverige schrijver de ganzenveer en in de linker een instrumentje om het perkament elke opboldering,hoe gering ook, te beletten. Op de achtergrond bij de boekenkast staat een derde monnik te lezen in een boek, dat hij zoeven uit die kast heeft genomen. Met het scriptorium staat het laboratorium in gemeenschap. Kolven en retorten zijn zichtbaar door de opening in de linkerwand. Daar worden de kruiden bereid tot zalven, pleisters en geneesmiddelen voor de zieken in en buiten het klooster en voor de gewonden in de strijd. Tegen de zuil staat een tekening van een kerk – ‘platte form’ – ontworpen door een kloosterbroeder-bouwkundige. De fraaie geelkoperen kandelaar op de vloer en de aquamanile (een koperen schenkkan in de vorm van een leeuw) op de tafel, wijzen er op, dat de Karthuizerbroeders zeer ervaren waren in de ‘kunstnijverheid’.

Ter Kruisvaart Noord-Holland, circa 1911 - Uit handleiding circa 1915: Een groep kruisridders, zoals ze waren uitgerust tot de kruistocht, gedurende welken de verovering van Damiate plaats had. Uit de omtrek van een of andere Noord-Nederlandse stad hebben zij zich aldaar vereenigd, om zich na de plechtige wijding hunner wapenen en vaandels door de Aartsbisschop te horen toespreken, alvorens zij zich gaan voegen bij de grote schare, welke naar het Heilige Land zal optrekken. De ridder steunende met de linkerhand op het slagzwaard en met de rechter op het schild met een klimmende leeuw (links op de voorgrond) is Willem !, Graaf van Holland. De Romaanse kerk, het poortgebouw en het woonhuis met houten voorgevel geven een blik in een vroegmiddeleeuwse stad.

Ludger predikt in de Groninger Gouwen, 785 Groningen, circa 1911 - Uit Nederlandsche schoolplaten van J.B. Wolters’uitgevers-maatschappij uit 1927: ‘Ludger was de eerste Fries, die het Evangelie in deze landen predikte. Op de teekening staan Ludger en de zijnen op de helling van een terp. Onder aan den heuvel ligt het drassige merenland van de noordelijke gouwen uit de tegenwoordige provincie Groningen. Op eene ophooging van den bodem zien we paalhutten afgebeeld, die den bewoners tot woning dienden. De kleeding der figuren is geteekend naar de afbeeldingen in, iets latere, vroeg Angelsaksische handschriften, terwijl de invloed van Noorsche en Frankische vormen op de plaat goed uitkomt.’

Monastic Life (12th Century) , 1956 - On seven depictions this wall charts shows a medieval monastery and the different tasks of monastic life. In the center of the wall chart you can see the big picture of a monastery complex: the church, a cloistered courtyard as well as the refectory, the dormitory, the chapter house and the necessarium). Monks are working in the woods and on the fields surrounding the monastery. On the small depictions monastic life is shown by pictures showing worship and prayer (2), education in a local school (3), hospitality (4), studying the scripture and copying manuscripts (5), pastoral care (6) and maintenance works (7). The wall chart probably shows the oldest European Benedictine monastery in the form it had in the 12th century. The development of towns and universities changed the feudal system which formerly collaborated with the monasteries.

Knights and peasants in the German East (13th century) , - The picture shows a scene from the High Middle Ages (12th/ 13th century), when German rulers, knights, monks, peasants, citizens advanced into the East – some of them violently others called by christianized Slavic rulers. You can see people, most of them peasants, arriving at their new homelands and asking the Teutonic Knights for their settlement sites. The knights are wearing white cloaks with a black cross. The peasants who have all their belongings on a covered wagon are standing in front of them. Many of the settlers were attracted by low taxes, hereditary rights to the land and further liberties. After Konrad I of Masowia had called the Teutonic Knights and their Grand Master Hermann of Salza against the heathen Old Prussians, a settlement movement - the so called medieval German settlement into the East (German Ostsiedlung)- began.

In an old monastery , 1950 - The picture shows a medieval monastery complex. Works like field and forest work are depicted in the surrounding lands. Inside of the walls you can see some monks (with tonsures) also doing different kinds of work: caring for the fruit trees in spring, working in the vegetable and herb garden, caring of the sick (pastoral care), at the church service (praying), doing clerical work (clerical studies), in the forge, doing stone cutter art work on the church wall and furthermore in conversation with the young and the old. What is more, you can see a wanderer who has found shelter in the monastery. The medieval monasteries derive their importance especially since the 9th century when Charlemagne found many monastery and cathedral schools. Only with the growing importance of the cities and universities they lost their significant cultural position.

Crusades , 1974 - The picture shows crusaders in the Middle East (1. crusade 1099 AD - 7. crusade 1396 AD). The Christian army consists of knights on horses, with shield and lance, hauberk and helmet. The helmets have different colours, according to the knight`s land of origin. Infantrymen, armed with bow and arrow, support the knights (People's crusade). At the horizon are Muslim troopers, wearing white clothes. They are also armed with bow and arrow.

Sovereign in the Dark Ages , 1976 - This wall chart is based on a miniature (illuminated manuscript) from the Liuthar-Evangeliar, an important Ottonian illuminated manuscript which was produced on behalf of Otto III (10th/11th century). The depiction of the Emperor (Otto II himself) is assimilated to depictions of Christ and is an example of the sacralization of the Emperor. You can see the sovereign and his clerical and worldly subordinates (soldiers). The Evangelists’ symbols (Lion of Mark, the Eagle of John, the Ox of Luke and the Angel of Matthew) are holding the white ribbon. Above the sovereign’s head you can see the blessing hand of Christ.
