Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden, praying before the Battle of Lützen 1632 Lützen, 1911 - “Based on an oil-painting of Prof. Louis Braun”. The picture shows king Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632), who1630 intervened in the Thirty Years War in Germany. He fought for the German Protestants against the Habsburg powers, who reaching the Baltic Sea were a threat to Sweden. In the year 1632 near Lützen (today Saxony-Anhalt) he fought against Wallenstein and the Habsburg troops and was killed by a shoot. Later the Protestants revered him as martyr and declared him savior of the German Protestantism, although he only aimed at defending the hegemonic power of Sweden. The picture shows Gustav praying before the battle raising his sword up to the sky. Behind Gustav you can see cavalries with the Swedish flag, in front of him killed soldiers.

Camp life. Period of the Thirty Years War , 1889 - The picture shows the life of the soldiers in a military camp during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648. On the left side of the picture you can see reveling and playing warriors. On the right side of the picture a group of arriving soldiers with women and children is depicted. Kappeler Milchsuppe (Milk-soup of Kappel) Kappel am Albis, 1961 - The picture shows the so called „milk-soup of Kappel“, the meal that took place in celebration of the First Peace of Kappel (1529), near Kappel am Albis. Setting up a huge wooden tub with milk-soup the infantry of both armies fraternized with each other, just on the borderline between the two cantons. The negotiations between the warring reformed and catholic villages are still going on in the background. But in the foreground the dispute is already settled by sharing the milk soup.

The siege of Jerusalem by the First Crusade , 1933 - The picture shows the siege of Jerusalem (7th to 15th July 1099) during the first crusade. After the destruction of the Church of the Resurrection (1095 A.C.), Byzantines Emperor Alexios I Komnenos was seeking for western support. In response to that, Urban II proclaimed the First crusade to Jerusalem. On the picture you can see a martial depiction of the assault on the city of Jerusalem with siege engines, catapults, siege towers and mobile wooden walls. The troops of the Fatimid governors defend the city.

Crusades , 1974 - The picture shows crusaders in the Middle East (1. crusade 1099 AD - 7. crusade 1396 AD). The Christian army consists of knights on horses, with shield and lance, hauberk and helmet. The helmets have different colours, according to the knight`s land of origin. Infantrymen, armed with bow and arrow, support the knights (People's crusade). At the horizon are Muslim troopers, wearing white clothes. They are also armed with bow and arrow.
